Do you have trouble getting your children to eat healthy snacks throughout the day?

Or have trouble coming up with healthy snacks for your kids?

I used to!

With my girls being picky eaters, especially my 5 year old; I’ve realized how truly difficult it is to have my girls eat healthy snacks. That’s why this past year my two girls and I had an A to Z healthy snack challenge.

Over 26 weeks we came up with over 130 healthy snacks to eat. Some of the snacks immediately became favorite snacks that we all want to have on hand, while others weren’t so great. (It may have been a recipe I found, or the fact that it was the first time I tried making it. Don’t give up on the ones that didn’t work for us!)

Let’s have a look back on those 26 weeks, one letter at a time! With each letter, will come at least 5 healthy snacks. So, if you’re looking for snacks for your kids at home, or snacks to bring in to your childs school that starts with a specific letter; you’ve come to the right place!

If you’re interested in teaching your little ones the alphabet, with more than the use of snacks, you NEED to check out Prep Through Play: Letters!! Your little one will have tons of fun and conquer learning the entire alphabet in 5 weeks through playing games!

Snacks that Start with R

This week for our healthy snack challenge we focused on the letter R.

And, after our long weekend(and week) of unpacking all our belongings into our new home, we also started focusing a little more on eating better. My older daughter and I started eating salads, which is so hard for me to believe! I haven’t really enjoyed a salad since before I became pregnant with my younger daughter. Just the thought of having one when pregnant with her turned me off. As for my older daughter, I have never been able to get her to eat any kind of lettuce before, but she said the romaine lettuce was one of her favorite parts; along with tomatoes and cucumbers. They were so delicious this past week, I’m hoping we can continue eating one a day.

If you would like to catch up with the other letters of the alphabet that have been accomplished with this challenge so far, you can. Go here to check out letter Qif you missed that, or head over to the A to Z series homepage!

On Monday I sliced up a red pepper.

I gave it to my girls raw….my older daughter wouldn’t eat it and my younger daughter tried it then started rubbing it on her feet. So, the rest of it is now chopped up into smaller pieces ready for any recipe or meal that calls for it. We may have it in some vegan quesadillas this weekend, or quinoa stew. I don’t blame them for not liking it plain, I tried it plain too, and I was not a fan.

On Tuesday it was the Fourth of July, so I had to make something Red, White, and Blue, so I made a simple fruit salad with strawberries, blueberries, and bananas.

I loved it and my girls loved it!

The amount in the bowl is only about a 5th of the amount I made and it was all gone in one sitting with everyone wanting more. But really, what’s not to like about it? Unless you’re one of those weird people (like my husband) who doesn’t like bananas, there’s nothing to not like in this simple snack.

On Wednesday my older daughter became super excited when she saw me making this snack; we had a rainbow!!

Neither of my girls would touch the red pepper, but the orange was gone (along with the other half not used) in just minutes. They also loved the banana, cucumber, and blueberries; not so much the red onion, we’ll save those for our salads.

My girls have been awesome with trying all of these fruits and veggies, and all of the other ones we have tried over the past couple of months.

On Thursday we had red grapes.

My girls love grapes!!

Plus, they’re easy to eat, pack with us to go and are full of water, so it’s a win all around. I think the whole bag we bought was gone within 2 days, that’s how much they like them. I just wish they weren’t so expensive, if they were the same price as bananas per pound we would always have these in the home!

On Friday we had raspberries.

My girls loved them, which is good because I’m not a big fan of raspberries. I can tolerate them, and can enjoy them in a smoothie with chia seeds and other fruits/veggies, but I don’t like the seeds in them when I eat them alone. My girls, however, love them.

They make a mess with them, but they love them; it doesn’t matter if they are fresh, frozen, in a smoothie, or nice cream. This time we bought them frozen, my older daughter loves frozen berries. She would eat a whole bag of frozen berries at one time if I let her.

It’s easier to show them how delicious fruits and veggies are now, than waiting til they’re older and hoping they will eat healthy. This is something we need to teach them and lead by example with.
