Do you have an overabundance of Basil that needs to be harvested before it goes to waste? I have the perfect recipe to use some of it up: Homemade Basil Salt.

How to Use Basil Salt

This easy recipe for Basil Salt makes a great finishing salt for fish, vegetables, and more! Or use it while cooking to add a subtle flavor to soups and pasta, or sprinkle it on popcorn and pizza. Whip it into your deviled eggs or softened butter to give them a punch of flavor.

It can also be used in your DIY bath salt scrubs or bath soaks as well. Add a few drops of floral essential oil like lavender and some coconut oil and you have a luxurious exfoliating scrub.

Finally, this makes such a thoughtful gift in a pretty mason jar for holidays, a hostess gift, and a welcome to the neighborhood gift. You can pop it in a basket or gift it along with a nice charcuterie board.

Remember that your recipes are only as good as your ingredients, opt for a good quality course salt and the freshest basil for the best results. You can use Celtic sea salt, Fleur de Sel, or pink Himalayan. Remember, good quality, don’t go for plain table salt!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of your favorite salt
  • ⅓ cup of fresh basil

Needed Equipment:

  • A food processor or blender
  • Baking sheet
  • Silicone mat or parchment paper

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 220 ℉.
  2. Cover a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper, this is the easiest way to gather the salt up to put in your container.
  3. After gathering your fresh basil (or buying a package at the store) rinse well to remove any dirt or bugs. Homemade Basil Salt Recipe (2)
  4. Drain and blot the basil dry with paper towels.
  5. Remove any woody stems, and give the leaves and green stems a rough chop.
  6. Layer salt and basil in your processor, if you are using a small one you may want to chop it up in two batches and then add it all back in to combine. Homemade Basil Salt Recipe (3)
  7. Pulse until basil is chopped up well and salt is finely ground, scrape sides as needed to get it all processed. If you want a big basil flavor add more leaves to the mix, the flavor as well as the color does fade a bit once dried. Homemade Basil Salt Recipe (4)
  8. Transfer to a prepared baking sheet and dry in the oven for 30 minutes, stir after 15 minutes. Homemade Basil Salt Recipe (5)
  9. Allow to cool and “pour” into your container using your mat or parchment paper as a funnel.
  10. Place the lid on the container and store it as you would any other salt. Homemade Basil Salt Recipe (6)
