Do mushroom growing kits work? ›

If you can find a high quality kit, then yes- absolutely. There are loads of different branded mushroom kits available, and lots of different species of mushrooms you can grow… so it's worth it to do a little bit of research before diving in.

Expect to grow: 2-3 harvests of mushrooms / 150g - 300g

The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests.

The main structure of a fungus is mycelium, which looks like fuzzy white threads growing through the material you feed it. Seeing it in your kit indicates you have good growth.

Not enough humidity

Humidity is quite important for mushrooms. If there isn't enough humidity, the mushrooms may slow down and/or stop growing. It would be like if we don't hydrate ourselves on a hot day or when we're exercising – we begin to slow down and not feel too good. Solution: You should mist more often.

Your mushroom kit does not need to be kept in the dark, but under no circ*mstance should you allow direct sun light to shine into your mushroom kit. The sunlight can dry out, overheat, and even kill your kit. Ambient light will cause Portabella mushroom caps to become darker brown in color.

As far as cost goes, these kits, which vary between $16–$20 dollars, aren't necessarily going to serve as an economical substitute for buying mushrooms from the grocery store. But they are a great way for you to get your mushroom-growing legs.

Humidity is a key factor for successful mushroom growth. Spray the area around your kit with a few pumps of water whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day.

You could use the bags again for spawn or fruiting blocks, but the integrity of the bag and filter patch decreases after multiple sterilizations, so you are better off using new bags to reduce the chances of contamination.

My kit looks like it is covered in white mold, is this normal? That's not mold, that's mycelium! Mushroom mycelium is white with fragrances ranging from earthy and sweet, to stronger and musty. Green or black colored molds are usually a sign of trouble.

What does healthy mycelium look like? ›

Spend time getting to know what your mycelium is supposed to look like so you can better identify unhealthy or contaminated patches. While mycelium is typically white and filamentous, contamination generally takes the form of green, blue, gray, or black patches or discolorations in your substrate.

Phenolic disinfectants are the most suppressive to the growth of Trichoderma mycelium, and of these, Disolite is more effective in killing Trichoderma spores than Environ or Prophyl at the same dilution rate.

This includes the time it takes for the spores or spawns to germinate and develop into a mature mushroom. The temperature and humidity of your growing environment can also affect how quickly a mushroom matures. Warmer temperatures tend to speed up growth while cooler temperatures slow it down.

Oyster mushrooms are by far the easiest and most reliable mushrooms to grow. For beginners we recommend our Mist & Grow Oyster mushroom grow kits. Simply cut an X in one side of the bag, cover with a humidity tent, and mist a few times daily. Within 7-10 days a cluster of baby mushrooms will appear!

Your Mushroom Grow Kit will do best in a warm place with indirect sunlight. Place your grow kit with the box opening facing away from a window that doesn't get too much sun.

You could make over $60,000 a year growing gourmet mushrooms for profit. If you have a few hours a week to spare, and you have a growing area where you can control the temperature, humidity and light, then you can be a successful grower.

Both the fruiting body and the mycelium contain beneficial bioactive compounds. In some cases, like with the lion's mane mushroom, these compounds are exclusive to either the fruiting body or the mycelium, so getting the full benefit requires the consumption of both parts.

Place your block in your living room, kitchen, or bedroom, in a spot that gets indirect sunlight. Mushrooms do need light, so don't think about putting your kit in that dark closet! What are the best temperatures for my mushrooms to grow in? Most mushroom kits will grow at room temperature (65-75 °F).
