What is the hijab that covers the head? ›

The word khimar or “veil” refers to a piece of cloth that was popularly used to cover the head in ancient Arabia. While the term "hijab" was originally anything that was used to conceal, it became used to refer to concealing garments worn by women outside the house, specifically the headscarf or khimar.

It's better to take it step by step. Start wearing loose clothes around non-mahram men, and try to keep your makeup limited to kohl, mascara, etc. without any bold colors. Then, start adding the hijab to your already-existing outfits, so you don't give them all up too soon.

In reality, a woman only has to wear a hijab if she's going to be seen by a man who isn't her husband or a blood relation. If a woman is in a public place where only women are present, according to Islamic law she doesn't need to be covered. However, some women may still choose to be.

Choose Breathable Fabrics

The first step to staying cool in the summer heat is to choose the right fabric. Opt for lightweight and breathable materials such as cotton, linen, and chiffon. These fabrics allow air to flow freely, preventing sweat and discomfort.

Puberty and Accountability: In Islamic jurisprudence, a woman becomes accountable for her actions upon reaching puberty, which typically occurs between the ages of 9 to 14. At this stage, wearing the hijab becomes obligatory.

That means, anyone who isn't closely blood-related is known as a 'non-mahram' – meaning they cannot see you without hijab, and you are not allowed to show them your hair. This would include your cousins and other members of your family who are not closely related to you through blood.

Being modest doesn't mean being ugly or boring! Making a traditional Muslim headscarf a compliment to any outfit is a simple way to show your unique sense of style. The purpose of the hijab is to protect your honor and beauty from unacceptable gazes, but that doesn't mean you can't make the look your own.

To avoid making your cheeks look chubby, you shouldn't wrap the hijab tightly around your face. You also shouldn't cover a large part of your forehead because doing that will attract more attention to the roundness of your face.

There really is no wrong way to do this – whether you just make up your mind and start wearing hijab or you wear it gradually. Perhaps you'll wear it when you are visiting the masjid or when you go out in certain settings until you are ready to wear it full time.

Modest clothing is also an integral part of following Allah's command. Therefore, we cannot comment on whether not opting for hijab is an unforgivable sin or not, but we do know that choosing to ignore the command could be a source of some punishment. However, Allah is the greatest, and he knows the best.

Burqa: Burqas and niqabs are often confused. Niqabs cover the face, but leave the eyes uncovered, while burqas cover the entire body, from the top of the head to the ground, with only a small screen allowing the wearer to see in front.
